I have always been a big reader and am constantly reading something. Until this year everything I read was purely fiction. At some point in the year I read that CEO's are reading a book a week on average! Clearly I was falling behind in my pursuit of being the best career coach possible since my non-fiction book reading totaled out at zero all time.
I had been listening to several podcasts from successful business owners and noticed several of the same titles kept coming up repeatedly. So I started a list and got to reading. Here are the books I read with a little review of each. Please note: If you click on one of the links and purchase, I will get a referral fee from Amazon. This helps me continue to bring you amazing content!
1. Think and Grow Rich by Napolean Hill
I can't tell you how many times I heard this book recommended on my favorite entrepreneur podcast EO Fire. So many people, successful people, continued to recommend it. I knew I had to check it out. I loved it. It was a totally different way of thinking for me. My mindset was so negative and I was not thinking big enough. I read it awhile ago and have plans to re-read it in 2018 to re-familiarize myself with the concepts.
Biggest takeaway - Get specific about what your ultimate goal is and make a statement that you feel passionate about.
2. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey
I promised honesty so here it is. I don't know what it was about this book but I couldn't really get into it. I think I made it about halfway through painstakingly before finally giving up! Plenty of people recommend it who are extremely successful but I am not one of them. At least not today. I will have to try again at some point, but probably not in 2018!
Biggest Takeaway - Super popular, but I couldn't stay interested enough to finish it.
3. You Are A Badass by Jen Sincero
Oh my goodness, this book! It's like it was written for me at the exact moment I needed it! I felt like a totally dweeb buying this book in my local Barnes & Noble but I had been eyeing it for quite some time and had to grab it. Actually, my 13 year old was like mom just buy it... So I did, kid pressure and all. I loved Jen's sarcasm and real world examples. This book got me over all my fears about really going for it in 2018 with my business and I am so excited for this next 12 months!
Biggest Takeaway - Quit making excuses and trust in your awesome self!
4. The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattle
This is the last book I read in 2017, I just finished it actually. I picked it up because Jen Sincero mentioned it as one of her recommended books. I want to be rich one day and it was so cheap I decided it would be my next read. This one takes some getting used to and I can see how some people may think it is a little too out there. I am digging it though and plan on incorporating it's plan. It's a short read but one packed with tons of great information, I recommend this one for sure.
Biggest takeaway - Get specific about what you want and envision it happening. Stay away from all negative thinking, including the news.
I am nowhere near a book a week, but I think going from zero all time to four in a year is something to be proud of! I have some planned reading in 2018 as well and plan to exceed four books and gain some great insights. Let me know if you have any recommendations!
