Set Career Goals in 2017
2016 has come and gone! Whether it was a good year or left you a little down, you can change your luck with a whole new year of opportunity. The best way to ensure you reach your potential this year is to set goals to move you towards success. Now that you know that you need to set some goals, how do you get started? Here are some tips to get your new year off with a bang.
Review Last Year
To know where you need to go this year, you first need to take a look at the highs and lows of last year. Take an hour or so to think about the things that you accomplished and where you failed or didn’t make it to where you wanted in 2016. Fizzle has a great resource on their website to review 2016 here which can help you on your mission. Focus on the areas where you fell short and where you succeeded. Be honest with yourself on the challenges you had and where you need to improve.
Pick a few goals
Think about where you want to be at the end of the year and identify three goals that you want to accomplish in 2017. You may be thinking “But I have so many things to work on!” Keeping your goals focused on just a few is realistic and attainable. More than that and you may become overwhelmed, which can send you into a procrastination mode. Need more help with writing measurable and attainable goals? Check out this SMART goals template.
Make a 90 day plan
Identifying where you want to get to is great, but it means nothing if you don’t make a plan to get there. One of the ways I am doing this is by the method I read from Classy Career Girl and breaking up big goals into 90 day increments. Think about the first steps you need to take to make a small step towards your goal. Maybe you decided that you really want to change your career and you don’t have the qualifications for what you want to do. A 90 day goal could be that at the end of 90 days you will be enrolled in the program that will get you on your way. You can even break the 90 days into 30, 60 and 90 day milestones to make sure you stay on track. For more on 90 day goals including a video and worksheet, here is a great resource from Asian Efficiency. After you hit that first 90 day goal, you will want to set another and another to keep you on a steady pace to reach your objectives.
By planning out your goals for 2017 and making 90 day plans to move you closer to them, will help ensure you are making steady progress. You have likely heard the saying by Earl Nightingale “Don't let the fear of the time it will take to accomplish something stand in the way of your doing it. The time will pass anyway; we might just as well put that passing time to the best possible use.” By setting your goals early in the year and making small continual steps towards achieving them, you will be in a great place this time next year. You can do this, so what are you waiting for? Get started today on your best year!
